Why was I called a price gouger?

Well, perhaps a little background is in order.

I currently have three auctions on GunBroker. These three auctions are for two stripped Spike’s Tactical lowers, and one complete Spike’s Tactical lower. On Wednesday (the day I put the auctions up), I immediately started getting calls from all over the country from people who wanted me to pull the auctions and sell to them. In each case, I politely declined, explaining to the callers that I kind of wanted to see where these auctions would go, and that it was more out of some morbid curiosity than a desire for a big payout. I described it to one guy from Tennessee (who was super cool, by the way) as some sort of bizarre social experiment.

Most people who’ve called have been understanding about it. Some, not so much. I’ve been called every name in the book this week, had people from 1500 miles away threaten to kick my ass (Yeah, you’re 1500 miles away, and on the phone, and you’re going to come kick my ass. SO BRAVE), been yelled at, and cussed out. None of that bothers me. In 8 days, I’ll be 40 years old. In my almost 40 years on this planet, I’ve been called worse things by better people, so being called names, being threatened, being yelled at or cussed out by some entitled assclown on the phone doesn’t even begin to phase me.

But then, someone called me a price gouger.

That bothers me, and I’ll tell you why.

First, it’s wrong. Plain and simple. AR-15 lowers are not staple items. They are not necessary for your every-day survival. They’re a luxury item, plain and simple. They’re not food, or milk, or clean water, or medicine, or gasoline, or home heating oil. You can live without having a stockpile of stripped lowers in your bunker, you absurd prepper. This isn’t a natural disaster like Katrina. This is a panic buy by people who are afraid of the possibility of some sort of AWB at some point.

Second, and possibly more important than the first point, I’m not setting the prices. The bidders are. There are no reserves on any of my auctions. None. So that means if nobody bids, or if only one person bids, they win the item at that low starting bid. If I’m not setting a price, how the hell am I price gouging?

What a lot of people seem to not understand is that the firearm retail industry is pretty screwed. Once I sell these lowers, that’s it. There are no more. Manufacturers can’t keep up with demand, distributors can’t get any from the manufacturers, local dealers like me can’t get any from the distributors, it’s done. The wholesale stream dries up, I can’t get inventory to sell, I’m out of business in less than 6 months.

So, while I may be making a few bucks extra this week, it’s unsustainable.

And who’s fault is that?

It’s your fault. It’s the panic-buyers fault. Your actions over the next few weeks are going to be responsible for putting a great many local gun stores out of business. Which is only going to drive prices even higher.

So enjoy it while it lasts, guys.

And don’t come crying to me when you no longer have a local gun store with a knowledgeable staff to go to with your questions, and your only option is the 18-year-old high school dropout working the gun counter at your big chain store. You know the kid I’m talking about, right? The kid who only cares about the guns he “uses” every day when he plays Call of Duty. Yeah, that kid.

Have fun with that. And remember who’s to blame for it.

The reason is: It doesn’t have anything to do with guns. It doesn’t have anything to do with my channel, or this website.

As a parent, and as someone who works very closely with an extremely well-known children’s charity organization, what happened makes me physically ill. If I think about it too long, it makes me cry. It makes me want to hug my son and never let him out of my sight.

But it has nothing to do with firearms.

It was a single deranged individual, who’s motivation we will probably never know, and who, for whatever reason (or reasons) decided to attack the absolute softest of soft targets, an elementary school full of defenseless children. The method of attack doesn’t matter (Anyone remember the bombing of Poe Elementary School in Texas in 1959?).

So while my thoughts and prayers are with those affected by what happened, me writing an article or making a video railing against the mass media and cursing them for trying to turn it into a gun issue would do absolutely no good. One, this site is so small that next to nobody would read it, and two, I’d be preaching to the choir, considering who my target audience is.

So the best I can do is pray to my God that He looks after these families, and comforts them as best He can.

I suggest you all do the same, and leave the rhetoric to the politicians.

Over the last few months, I’ve gotten several emails asking me if I’d ever used FrogLube. At the time, the only response I could give was in the negative, because I hadn’t. But eventually, I got enough requests for a review that I decided I should give it a shot.

So I called the fine folks at FrogLube, and they were kind enough to send me out some samples of their product.

Boy, what a product it is.

For those of you who aren’t aware, FrogLube is a plant-based, non-toxic, non-petroleum, non-flammable, biodegradable, American made cleaning, lubricating, and protecting product for firearms. Oh, and it’s also USDA Certified Biobased, and FDA certified food grade.

Oh, and it smells awesome.

But, does it work?

Hell yes it works.

But it only works if you follow the damn instructions for application. As long as you can do that, I think you’ll find, like I did, that it is the greatest gun cleaner/lube to have ever been brought to market. It’s not the first plant-based CLP, and it probably won’t be the last. But the difference between this one and others I’ve tried is that it actually works. And it doesn’t just work, it works exceedingly well.

I’ve tried just about every CLP product on the market. I love trying new stuff. But what has always happened in the past is that I try something new a couple or three times, find it doesn’t work as well as my old friend Hoppes, and just go back to that.

Not anymore.

As long as they keep making this stuff, and as long as they don’t change the formula, and as long as it keeps working, I’ll keep using FrogLube.

It really is just that good.

And no, I’m not a paid spokesman, but I damn well would be if they asked. They wouldn’t even have to pay me a lot.

First and foremost, I want to apologize to everyone for not being more active here. The summer/fall was a very busy time for me personally, with lots going on, and I let the site slip from my list of priorities. I still managed to do a few videos, but not as many as I would have liked.

All of this is looking like it’s about to change. I’ve been able to be more active with videos, and I intend to do a bunch of write-ups about said videos in the very near future.

But you have a problem. You don’t like the factory trigger on your Glock (and who does, because the Glock factory trigger sucks), and you want something better. Something crisper. Something maybe a tad lighter. Something with a shorter reset.

Well, guess what, bubba? You can have that. For about 25 bucks, and less than 5 minutes of your time, you can have everything your heart desires.

All you have to do is replace the factory connector with an aftermarket one.

Now, when it comes to aftermarket connectors, I prefer Ghost. But, should you decide that Ghost isn’t the one for you, there are plenty of other options available. Just Google it and you’ll see for yourselves.

Anyway, when it comes to Ghost, you basically have two options for a connector (not including advertised pull weight). You have the standard Ghost connector that requires a little bit of fitting (due to their proprietary “trigger control tab”), but will allow you to completely get rid of trigger overtravel, or their “Ultimate” 3.5 pound connector, which is a 100% drop-in unit, no fitting required.

No matter which you choose, you’ll end up with a lighter, crisper trigger, with about a 50% reduced reset. The reset is the most important part to me, because it allows for faster, more accurate follow-up shots. And in a carry/duty/competition gun, faster, more accurate follow-up shots is pretty damn important.

Now, be advised, your trigger will not be at the weight advertised on the package simply by replacing the connector. It’ll be about a pound lighter (on average), it’ll be noticeably smoother, definitely crisper. But it won’t be 3.5 (or 4.5, or whatever) pounds. If you want that, you need to replace more than just the connector. You need to replace the springs, too.

But if you opt for that, stay away from the Ghost springs. Their connectors are great, but their springs, not so much. If you want to replace the springs, get a spring kit from Wolf.

A Ghost connector combined with a Wolf spring kit is very nice indeed.

But most people opt for just the connector.

Try that out first, see how you like it.

As I pull up to the store, I see an older gentleman (every bit of 80, possibly older) standing near the door, looking at the hours of operation sign, and smoking a pipe.

I park, get out of my truck, and head for the door to open up. As I’m about to inform the gentleman that it’ll be about 5 minutes before I’m open, the following happens.

Old Guy – “Does that Dodge get 60 miles per gallon?” (He’s referring to my pickup, a 2005 Dodge quad-cab with the Hemi engine.)

Me – “(laughing) No sir, I’m lucky to get 18 or 19 on the highway, maybe 13 or 14 in the city.”

Old Guy – “Well, my little Honda scooter gets 60 miles per gallon. You should buy one of those.”

He then takes a long draw on his pipe, smiles, waves, and walks away. No scooter in sight.

It’s going to be a weird day.

There’s a lot of guns that look exactly alike out there.

Human beings, in general, like to make the items they own “their own”, and firearms aren’t immune to this.

Custom or semi-custom furniture, custom engraving, aftermarket parts like grips, sights, mag releases, slide releases, speed chutes, et cetera, et cetera, ad nauseum.

With very few exceptions, chances are there is a veritable cornucopia of aftermarket parts and customization options available to you for whatever gun (or guns) you own.

Have a basic AR and want to make it look like your favorite video game gun? No sweat.

Have a 10/22 and want to make it look like an AR (or a Thompson, or a PS90, or pretty much anything else)? Easy.

Have a 1911 and want to make it look like it would fit in at a Mexican wedding (or funeral, or baby shower)? We can make that happen, too.

You guys starting to get the point?

If you want it, and if you have the wallet to support it, there isn’t much of anything you can’t do to personalize your gun.

Now, one of the simplest and least expensive ways of customizing a firearm is by the use of color fill. All color fill entails is filling in the rollmarks or engraving on your gun with color. Hence the term color fill.

This can be accomplished in many ways. Crayons, nail polish, Chinese markers (also known as grease pencils), and model paint are the most popular ways, and I’m sure that there are people out there trying different stuff out all the time.

Out of the four methods mentioned above, I have personally used three. Crayons, Chinese markers, and model paint. I’ve never used nail polish, but I know a lot of people that swear by it.

Out of the three that I have personal experience with, I prefer the model paint method. It’s the method that (to me) lasts the longest, is the most impervious to solvents, dirt, oils, and heat, and is (in my opinion) the method that yields the best results.

They all have their pros and cons, but for me, the extra work involved with using paint is worth the better (to me) results.

You can go subtle (black lettering on an olive drab gun), or you can go nuts (I’ve done jobs for people that wanted hot pink and neon green), or you can go somewhere in the middle. The sky is literally the limit, and for about 10 bucks and an hour of your time, you can make your Glock (or AR, or 10/22, or 1911, or whatever) stand out from the masses.
